Blurb:
In book 3 of the Rim Country Mysteries, an elderly woman stumbles into the campsite as Rita, Cliff, and Rita’s long-lost mother Willow enjoy s’mores and folk music around the fire. The action heats up when Willow falls for the key suspect, Rita’s old friend and mentor. Rita discovers her mother isn’t the woman she thought she was, and Rita must overcome a spate of life-threatening obstacles before anyone else dies.
Excerpt:
“Lovely Rita, I’ll never let ya down again.”
“Now that we’re being honest, I need to tell you that I legally changed my name from Lovely Rita to Rita Anne when I was eighteen and married Jared. I know you love that Beatles song called ‘Lovely Rita Meter Maid,’ but I wanted a more conventional name and life.”
“Does that mean you wouldn’t mind calling me Mom instead of Willow?”
We fell silent until nothing but embers remained of the fire.
Mom stretched, yawned, and said that the clear sky and millions of stars were different than what she could see in Austin at night. “It cools down after the sun goes down here.” She rubbed her arms. “The humidity in Austin keeps it hot even at night.” She commented on the lack of mosquitos and locusts.
I pondered what it would feel like to have her live with Cliff and me, or nearby in a place of her own, then remembered that she said she was looking for a job. She was past full-retirement age.
“What kinds of jobs have you been applying for?” I didn’t remember her ever working when I was a child. She had only let me get a job scooping ice cream when I promised not to let it interfere with high school. Could an ex-con even get social security benefits? I was sure she had no savings.
“I took some online clerical classes while I was in prison,” she said.
